Washington'daki Etiyopya / Ethiopia in D.C.

Kısa ama yoğun Amerika macerasının ilk durağı Washington D.C.’de yolum U Street çevresindeki “Küçük Etiyopya”’ya düştü. Meğerse, D.C., Amerika’da Etiyopyaların en yoğun yaşadığı şehirmis. Ayaküstü sohbetlerden ve okuduklarım öğrendiğim kadarıyla, Etiyopyalılar Amerika’ya 1970’lerde öğrenim ve çalışma amaçlı gelmeye başlamışlar. Zamanla D.C.’deki siyah Amerikalıların yerleşim bölgesi U Street/ 9. sokak bölgesi yükselen fiyatlardan dolayı boşalmaya başladıkça Etiyopyalılar buraya taşınmışlarr. Zamanında köleliğin kaldırılmasında rol oynamış, Duke Ellington’ın piyano çaldığı, sivil haklar için sokağa dökülmüş bu bölgeye Küçük Etiyopya denmesi herkesin hoşuna gitmiyormuş.Mış, miş, muş...

Öyle ya da böyle, Etiyopyalılar gittikçe büyüyen bir topluluk olarak şehirde kendilerini hissettiriyorlar. Taksi şoförlerinin neredeyse hepsi Etiyopyalı ve aralarında kendi dillerini konuşuyorlar. Etiyopyalı sanatçılar konser veriyor. Benim için en önemlisi, akşam Etiyopya yemekleri yeniyor.

Etiyopya mutfağında sebzeli, etli baharatlı ve bence Türk mutfağına yakın tatlar var. En önemli unsur “injera” denilen görüntüsü kepekli krep gibi (kepekli krep?) ekmek. Etler, tavuklar, sebzeler injera içinde ortaya geliyor. Ayrıca herkese yufka büyüklüğünde birer injera. Yemekler; çatal, kaşıksız ekmek yardımıyla elde yeniyor. U Street çevresinde seçenek çok. Ben oralı birinin tavsiyesiyle The Magjet’te yedim. Dekorasyon sade ve fiyatlar oldukça makuldü. 4 kişi 3 farklı yemek paylaşıp kişi başı bahşiş dahil 12 dolar ödedik.

Güneşli bir günde,  Roosevelt, Lincoln, King bütün anıtlar arasında dolaştıktan sonra harcanan enerjileri geri almak için Etiyopya mutfağı ideal. Şehrin turistik, bürokratik havasının aksine U Street çevresi caz barları ve Etiyopya tatlarıyla bir maden. Bir dahaki D.C. yolculuğunda keşfedile…

During my short but intense visit in the US, my first stop was D.C. where I had to chance to go “Little Ethiopia” around U Street. D.C is the city where a growing Ethiopian community is now concentrated. As I read and learnt through small talks, Ethiopians have been coming to US since 1970s with the purpose of education and work. In time, they moved to U Street/ 9th Street area because former Black American inhabitants were moving out due to rising prices. However, the term “Little Ethiopia” is not embraced by every one in the city considering that the history of the neighbourhood goes back to abolition of slavery, to civil rights movement, to Duke Ellington.

One way or another, one can feel the presence of Ethiopians in D.C. Almost all taxi drivers are from Ethiopian origin, they still speak their own language amongst themselves. Musicians from Ethiopia are having concerts, people eat Ethiopian for dinner.        

As I experienced, Ethiopian cuisine is with spicy meat and veggies. I found some flavours close to Turkish cuisine. The most important component is the special bread “injera”. It looks like French pancake, but a brown one. Beef, chicken, veggies; everything is served in injera. Plus, everyone gets one more injera as separate. No fork or knife; one eats by hand, grapping the food in a peace of bread. 

There are many alternatives around U Street. A local person recommended me“the Magjet”. The ambiance was simple and the prices were reasonable.  We, four people paid $12 (including the tip) per person for 3 main courses.

The Ethiopian cuisine is ideal to get the energy back, after making a historical tour around Lincoln, King, Roosevelt’s and other monuments of the capital, preferably on a sunny day. As opposed touristic and at the same time bureaucratic atmosphere of the city, U Street with jazz bars and Ethiopian flavours is definitely the place to hang around. Hope to discover more next time…  

Van'a Saygıyla / Tribute to Van

Bu yazıyı çok önceden yazıp bir türlü yayınlayamıstım. Düşündüğüm başlık "Van'da 1 günüm olsaydı ve bir gün daha" olacakrtı ama deprem yüzünden güzel Van'da ne zaman bir günüm daha olacağını bilemiyorum. 
 
Iran sınırındaki Van, Türkiye'nin en doğusundaki şehirlerden biri. Son dönemlerde, iş icabı yolumun sık düştüğü, ama iş yüzünden, çok gezemediğim bir şehir. Yine de son iki seferdir ocakbaşında yemeklerin -daha çok etlerin- tadına bakacak ve son seferde Akdamar Kilisesine gidecek vakit bulmayı başardım. Gezip, duyduklarımdan notlarım şöyle:

Van'da 1 günüm olsa, 

• Van Gölü’ndeki, Akdamar Adasını ve adanın üzerindeki Akdamar kilisesini ziyaret ederim, (Vanlılar bu uçsuz, bucaksız göle haklı olarak deniz diyor). Akdamar en az yarım gününüzü alıyor, güzel havada adada tüm gün geçirilebilir. Merkezden uzak, taksi pahalı oluyor ama Gevaş minibüsüyle 45 dakikada adaya giden teknelere ulaşabilirsiniz (5 TL).  Akdamar Kilisesi, Ermenilerin en eski ve mimari açıdan en özel ibadet yerlerinden, 16. yüzyıldan beri adanın üzerinde yerleşim yok. Son 2 senedir, "özel izinle" yılda bir kere Eylül ayında kilisede ayin yapılıyor. Ayine, birkaç kuşak öncesinden Van’ın yerlisi olan Ermeni vatandaşları da katılıyor. (“Vanlı”lardan duyduğum kadarıyla, Ermeni mezarlarının bile içleri açıldığı düşünülürse, sınır kardeşliği için yapılacak daha çok iş var.)

• Şehir merkezinde döneceksem ve enerjim kaldıysa kaleye çıkarım, son 1 senede surlar yenilenmiş, kalenin tepesindeki camii faaliyete geçmiş.  (benim için bir dahaki sefere)
• Bir de et severler akşam ocakbaşına..    (Zaten şehrin vejetaryen seçenekler sunduğu pek söylenemez)  Geçen sefer göl kenarındaki Merit Şahmaran Otel'deydik, bu sefer de merkezdeki Tamara'da ocakbaşına gittik. Grup olarak gezenler için ideal, hafta sonu fasıl çalıyor. Her masanın kendi ocağı olduğundan keyifli bir ortam ama et sevmeyen biri olarak ben biraz fiyatlı buldum.

 

    1 günüm daha varsa ve aylardan Ağustos-Eylülse

• Erçek Gölü kıyındaki flamingoları izlemeye giderim. Göl, şehir merkezinden yaklaşık yarım saat uzaklıktaki Erçek Beldesine bağlı.  Erçek Gölü yıl boyunca Iran ve Güney Afrika arasında uçan flamingoların doğal yaşam ve üreme alanı. Simdi okuduğuma göre, bazı koloniler yıl boyunca gölde kalıp nöbet tutuyor ve yeni gelenlere nerede durmaları gerektiğini hatırlatıyor.  Fazla yaklaşmak mümkün olmadığı için dürbün ve büyük objektifler geziyi daha keyifli hala getirecektir. En komik manzaralardan biri, biz yaklaştıkça sürünün topluca sola kaymasıydı. Sonuç olarak kıyıya 50 metreden fazla yaklaşamadık.                                                                                                                      Not:. Bu yıl eylül ayında, Erçek Belediyesi göl kenarındaki ilk flamingo festivalini düzenlendi.

 

• Merkezdeki pasajları, kuyumcuları gezip güzel Ermeni işçiliği ürünü antikalara, o örneklerden yapılmış takılara göz atarım. (benim için bir dahaki sefere)
• Kedi sever biri olduğumdan, mutlaka Van kedisi mıncıklarım

I drafted this post long ago. The title was "if I had one day in Van and one more". Given the conditions and the long term impact of the earthquake, I am not sure when  I will have one more day in beautiful Van.

Van is situated at the Eastern border of Turkey, neighboring Iran. I have been there several times in the last years for work and since I was there for work, I could see only one very little of what the city has to offer. Nevertheless,  I had the change to taste “ocakbaşı” in the last two times and manages to visit Akdamar Island and Akdamar church last time. Considering how little I visited, here are my notes from what I have heard and seen:
If  I had one day in Van,

•         I would visit the Akdamar Island and the Akdamar Church in the lake of Van. (Locals rightly call this endless lake as the sea).It would take half a day to get there and come back but one can easily spend the whole day in the island on sunny, warm days. As the place is outside the city center and the taxi may be expensive, I took the minibus to Gevaş (5 lira/ 3$ per person) to get where the boats leave for the island. It is a very old and special church for Armenians and Armenian architecture. There is no settlement in the island but the church since 16h century. The religious place was close for years.  Only in the last two years, it was open for ceremony once a year in September with a “special permission”. At the time of the year, the city hosts Armenian citizens whose ancestors were locals of Van.  It takes much more to celebrate Armenian heritage and build fraternity across the border, considering that even some Armenian cemeteries were dig out as I heard from the “locals”.

•          If I were going back to center and had the energy, I would also go to the Castle.  In the last year, the place has been renovated with a functioning mosque at the very top of it. (I am saving it for the last time)

•       Ocakbaşı [barbecue] would be ideal dinner for meat lovers. Remind you, Van is not the most vegetarian friendly city in Turkey.   Last time, we had eaten at Merit Şahmaran Hotel by the lake, this time we were in the center at Tamara Hotel. It is joyful way to eat in groups with music playing in weekends. Each table has its own barbecue. It is fun, albeit, I found, pricy.  (Note that I am not fan of meat products).                           

If I had one more day and it is August-September;

• I would go to watch flamingos, by the lake of Erçek, half an hour ride from the city center. The lake is a natural settlement of these creatures moving between South African and Iran throughout the year. I have just read some colonies of flamingos stay in Erçek the whole year to watch the area and show others where to stop.   It is not possible to get very close to them, so take binoculars with you and objectives to zoom in.  The funniest thing was to watch how they all moved towards the left of the lake, as we were approaching, so we could only get around 50 meters near the shore.                                                                                                                  P.S: The first flamingo festival was organized in September 2011 by the municipality.
• Explore the jewellery shops and arcades in the center for antiques and jewellery modeled after Armenian crafts  (also saved it for the last time).
• As a cat lover, I would find a cat of Van and play around with it.

Prag Caz Bot / Jazz Boat Prague

Elbe nehrinin üzerinde, Prag’in hem gündüzünü, hem güneşin batışını, hem ışıl ışıl gecesini canlı caz quartet eşliğinde izlemek; bu yüzen restoranda ne yesek güzeldir herhalde. Bilemiyorum çünkü ben çok tok olduğum (bkz. sonraki post Prag Balkan restoranı)  için dondurma yedim sadece.. Ama yan masalarda yenenler fena görünmüyordu…

Prag’ta gezdiğim, yediğimi ayrıca anlatacağım ama en çok son akşam bindiğim caz botu sevdiğimden oradan başlamak istedim. Lojistik bilgileri hemen vereyim, caz bota Cechuv Köprüsü’nün altından biniliyor (Charles Köprüsünün kuzeyinde, eski şehir tarafında kalıyor). Program 8.30’da başlıyor, son anda terasta oturmak koşuluyla kapıdan indirimli bilet bulmak mümkün (öğrenci 30, tam 50 TL civarı). Tedbirli giyinmekte fayda var, verilen battaniye yetmeyebiliyor.  Aylık programlara buradan bakılabilir.   Dediğim gibi yemekler yenilebilir görünüyordu ve fiyatlar makuldü.

Ben tesadüf klasik caz parçalarının çalındığı bir güne denk geldim. Kararan gökyüzü, şehrin ışıkları, nehir ve kulağımda Davis’ler, Fitzgerald’lar, Sinatra’lar, yanımda sevdiceğim…

Not: Bir de sağda, soldan kim geçerse, kıyıda kim varsa çoşkuyla el salladık, Prag’da adet buymuş, anladım.

Jazz Boat is a restaurant/ jazz club on which one can see Prague on daylight as well as with city lights, in between watch the sunset. I assume that food would be delightful. I can only assume that because I did not taste the food, I was already full (see the coming post on Balkan restoran in Prague). The food on tables next to us seemed ok though…

I will summarize in another post what I have seen and ate in Prague. I start with Jazz Boat because it was my favorite of the whole trip. Logistics are as the following: The pick up location is Cechuv Bridge (North of Charles Bridge on the side of the old town). The concert starts at 8.30. It is possible to buy last minute tickets for the terrace at reduced rates (around 15 Euros for students / 25 Euros for adults). Make sure you have warm clothes with you, blankets may not be enough. The monthly program is available here. As I said food looked edible and prices were reasonable.

By chance, I was there on Friday, the day for jazz classics. I really enjoyed the sky getting dark, the city lights, the river, the classics such as Miles Davis, Armstrong, Fitzgerald, Sinatra in my ears with my beloved one right next to me...

P.S: Do not miss those passing by or standing at the riverside and enthousiastically waving to you. I believe it is a tradition.  

Batangas'ta Haftasonu- Weekend in Batangas

Tropik memleketlere gidip denize girmeden olmaz tabii. Ben de Manila’da geçirdiğim kısa zaman içerisinde plaja gitme fırsatı bulduğum için çok mutluyum. Batangas bölgesi Manila’dan 2-3 saat uzaklıkta (trafik olmadığını düşünürsek). Biz orada Laiya plajında Coco Group tatil köyünün ağaç evlerinde kaldık. Evet, gerçek ağaç evler!!

Beyaz kum, mavi dalgasız bir deniz, tropik meyveler, insan daha ne ister? Deniz suyu o kadar sıcaktı ki, ilk gün, net 5 saat suyun içinde kalmış olabilirim.Aksama doğru sular çekiliyor ve sabah erken saatlerde iyice çekilmiş oluyor. O saatler yüzmek için uygun olmasa da, plajda yürüyüş yaparak gün batımının tadını çıkarmak mümkün. Bizim kaldığımız tatil köyünün yürüyerek 15 dakika uzağında “beyaz plaj” denilen daha geniş ve turistik bir plaj vardı. Orada küçük bir tekne, kano vs. kiralamak mümkün… Ayrıca, isterseniz ücretsiz olarak gerideki ağaçlardan deniz kenarına kadar, ip üzerinde Tarzan atlayışı yapabiliyorsunuz (evet, ben yaptım tabii)

Bir de, hayatımda ilk defa mercan kayalıkları arasında şnorkelle daldım. Dalış yapmayarak ne kadar büyük bir zenginlikten ve keyiften mahrum ediyoruz kendimizi, yarım saat mercan kayalıklarında yüzdüm ve bu sonuca vardım. Yine de, korkularımı yenip, vakit bulup su altına merak salar mıyım bilemiyorum.

Bizim kaldığımız yerin yemekleri fena değildi, dönüşte Rose and Grace diye bir restoranda öğle yemeği yedik, çok nefisti. Orada yediklerimi, satın aldıklarımı ve yol üzerinden aldığımz hindistan cevizli tatlıyı ayrıca yazacağım.

It is almost mandatory to go seaside once you are in tropical lands. I am really happy that I had the chance to go to the beach and swim during the time I was in Manila. Batangas region is few hours drive from Manila Metropole. There, we went to Laiya beach and stayed in tree houses belonging to Coco Group resort. Yes, genuine tree houses, right next to the shore.

White sand, a calm blue water, tropical fruits, what more can I ask? The water was so warm that I may have spent nearly 5 hours in the water.  Later during the day, it is less pleasant to swim at the shore because of the low tide but it was very nice to have a walk at the beach and enjoy the sunset. There is a more touristic “white beach” 15 minutes walk from where we stayed and there it is possible to rent a boat to take you to coral riffles. It is also possible to make a Tarzan-like long jump with ropes coming from trees back there towards the shore, and this was for free.(sure, I tried and enjoyed it).

For the first time in my life, I did snorkeling in coral riffles. I was so amazed with what I saw and thought of how much beauty and richness I miss by not diving. I wish I could have the courage and time to take diving lessons at some point.

The food offered in the resort was nice. On the way back, we stopped in a restaurant called “Rose and Grace” for lunch and it was special. I’ll write in detail about what I ate, shopped there, and also about the coconut desert we had on the way back.
